The answer to all the above questions (and many, many others) is the Macintosh Resource Editor, commonly referred to as ResEdit. There have been many revisions of this program from the good folks at Apple; the latest version I have seen as of this date is 1.1d3, revised sometime around October, 1986. This is the version that this document covers, although these instructions will be applicable to the previous versions, for the most part anyway. I've heard ResEdit called "the most powerful public-domain utility", at least on the Mac. However, short of a preliminary MacWrite file created by Apple back in December 1985 for version 1.04D, I've never seen any documentation on ResEdit! As a result, it seems that a lot of people have simply been told that ResEdit is "dangerous" and "for hackers only"that you have to be some sort of guru to do anything with it. Nonsense! With proper guidelines, intuition, and a little common-sense, anyone can master basic ResEdit techniques very quickly. Also, please make no mistake -- there are more than a few things that I'm still trying to figure out with this program, and doubtless there are many things that people may want to do that I won't go into in this particular document. There may even be better ways to do some of the things that I am discussing -- But hey, if I was perfect...
